Title of Abstract: Negotiating Materials: An Excavation of Dwellings in Zaatari Camp in Jordan
The construction of dwellings in the Zaatari Syrian refugee camp in Jordan has been strongly affected by the availability of materials within the camp or the lack thereof. This article sheds the light on significance of building materials in a context where building is prohibited: "With what to build?". By focusing on the materials involved in the construction of dwellings in the Zaatari camp such as tents, stones, cement, blocks, plastic and metal sheets (zinco), the paper shows that materials are not simply assembled from the 'sea of everyday life', but rather have political, cultural, and symbolic dimensions that refugees have to negotiate while they build. The paper also highlights the importance of visibility and how it affects the political dimensions of building materials.
